His difficult upbringing and his last encounter with his father
Ziyech, who was born in Dronten, had a difficult upbringing. He was raised among his eight siblings. In terms of his parents, he was just 10 years old when his father died, leaving his mother as a single parent. In an interview, Ziyech described his final moments with his father. He said it was a chilly winter following Christmas, and his father was laying in bed, his health deteriorating after being unwell for some time.
Then Ziyech, 10, wanted to remain with him even though he had to go to bed. He slept off at the edge of the bed, awoke at midnight, and walked to his room. But later, at about 3 a.m., he walked to the living room after hearing his family members’ grief. His father was no longer alive. Following his father’s death, he pondered retiring from football, but it was his tutor Doufikar who persuaded him to continue playing for the sake of his father. His siblings took up the role of father, caring for him until he was 14 years old. He ran away from home to play in Heerenveen and ended himself in a foster home.
But his bond with his family is as strong as ever. Ziyech claims that his mother is now 70 years old and can no longer walk or bear the strain, so she can no longer come to the stadium to see him play, but he knows she is proud of him. She tells him how she feels when he gets attacked whenever she watches his game on TV.
